“So So Vegan”

You will probably notice throughout the month that all of our Vegan MoFo posts will not involve food. I realize it is “Month of Food” but for us Veganism is more than just food (which it should be to anyone that is Vegan as Veganism goes beyond just diet). The majority of our posts have been and probably will continue to be food related, but we would just like to make it clear that Veganism includes what you eat, wear, type of entertainment you avoid (such as rodeos), type of hygiene items you use, avoiding items tested on animals as best as possible, not participating in “sports” that harm animals (such as hunting and fishing),etc.

Now that the serious part is out of the way I would like to post these two videos. They are videos actually making fun of Vegans but they are still pretty hilarious. Most Vegans seem to agree. If you are Vegan and these offend you I apologize.

Friends, Vegans, Earthlings, lend me your eyes;

I come to ask for knowledge, not to post food.

Alright, enough of changing Marc Antony’s (Shakespeare’s) words for my (rahzh) own gain.

I am interested in information about Vegan cooking courses. I have found information on quite a few 1-day Vegan classes or vegetarian courses but that is not the information I seek. I want to find Vegan classes or courses that are longer (weeks, months or beyond) and cover multiple areas and/or methods of cooking. If they are accredited and give certification upon completion even better, but not necessary.

If you have any information you can post it as a reply here, e-mail me at RLS2K3@GMAIL.COM, or Direct Message me on Twitter (HHVeganos). Thanks for any and all help in advance.

Here was a Post! When comes another? (one last use of Marc Antony/Shakespeare ;) )

Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference 2009 (LLNWAR2009) in Portland June 26-28 & Animal Rights 2009 National Conference (AR2009) in Los Angeles July 16-20. Attend one, have some fun, & find out what needs to be done!

In the next 30 days there will be two major conferences in the USA and both are happening on the West Coast. June 26-28 the Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference 2009 (LLNWAR2009) will be held in Portland,OR at Portland State University in the SmithMemorial Building. July 16-20 the Animal Rights 2009 National Conference (AR2009) will be held in Los Angeles,CA at the Westin LAX.

Each conference has multiple sponsors and organizers (far to many to list them all. For a full list check out the website for each conference). The “Let Live” conference is being sponsored/organized by “Vegans for Animal Advocacy, with support from Let Live Foundation as well as local area businesses such as Herbivore Clothing, and Food Fight Grocery“. The “AR2009″ conference is being sponsored/organized by FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement), In Defense of Animals (IDA), and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

The conferences can be many things and serve many purposes. The obvious purpose that they serve is to educate people in multiple areas of AR. With so many speakers/events/videos you can pick and choose what you would like to learn about. Secondly, they provide a time and place for like minded people to come together and be able to relax and share their lives with each other. Which leads to the third purpose of having fun. You can eat, drink, go to a nearby animal sanctuary, stay up late talking, and so on. While I (rahzh) have never attended “Let Live” I did attend AR2007 and I can say without a doubt that it served all three of these purposes.

After you leave you feel a sense of being rejuvenated and wanting to do more. This happens because not only will you learn new information but you will be around people similar to yourself and have fun doing it which is important. After leaving you may also feel a little sad though especially if in your day to day life you are not around so many like minded people. Still very much worth it.

We feel that, if possible, you should attend at least one of them ( make sure to register). If you have the capability and resources to attend both then that is even better. As they are both on the West Coast it makes it a little harder for people living closer to the East Coast to attend. Do not fret if this is you. The Animal Rights National Conference rotates every year between Los Angeles & outside of Washington D.C. and that means next year the conference will be coming to the East Coast. Not to mention there are other conferences throughout the USA and the World.

Let Live conference

Animals belong to themselves, not to us. They should not suffer in our systems of food, science, entertainment and fashion. Instead, they should live free of the tyranny we put upon them. But they cannot claim this freedom alone. The Let Live NW Animal Rights Conference is a grassroots forum for people who want to help. Through an open, respectful, and friendly environment this conference will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn skills and strategies to become better advocates for the animals, no matter ones experience level in activism.

This conference is for first-timers, experienced activists, and anybody in between who hopes to make a real difference for animals and build a stronger, more effective community and animal liberation movement. This conference is for anybody who wants to live and let live.

Let Live 2008 Plenary

Let Live Conference

AR2009 conference

Animal Rights 2009 is a forum for sharing experience, reporting on progress, discussing tactics, networking & “recharging our batteries.” It brings our movement together under the banner of animal liberation from all forms of human oppression. All viewpoints that support this goal are welcome (except for advocacy of injury).

Animal Rights 2009 reflects America’s continuing concern with terror. Indeed, it is dedicated to exposing and challenging the terror perpetrated every day against billions of innocent, sentient nonhuman animals.

A Request to our readers and several quick and not so quick updates. Chow.com, Facebook, Twitter, World Wide Vegan Bake Sale, a job for Rahzh, Farm Sanctuary, TryNewFood.com, FARM USA, and LAVA

So many updates. Where to begin?

I guess we will begin by asking something of you, our valued readers. We ask that you go to Chow.com and vote for our “Fabulous falafel gyro with titillating tahini sauce” recipe. We would be extremely grateful if you would do this for us and “start spreading the news… ” (I could be the next Soy Frank Sinatra ;) ) in any way that you can (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, your blog, or even by word of mouth). We originally were just submitting our recipes to their site, but saw that they had a contest going on and decided we would enter. Most, if not all of the recipes, are not Vegan and it would be awesome if a Vegan recipe won. Winning is not just based on votes, but if we get more votes more people will be more likely to check out the recipe. So winning isn’t even necessary to show people that Vegan food can be delicious.

As we mentioned we were submitting our recipes to Chow and that is because as of late we have been submitting our recipes to a bunch of different sites. Some just normal food sites that add your recipe right as you submit it and to other Vegan sites that have recipe/resource sections and have to approve your submission. So little by little we are spreading the word of tasty Vegan food as well the blog and other topics that we occasionally cover.

In spreading the word we have created a Hungry Hungry Veganos Twitter account (HHVeganos) And it has been growing pretty fast. That means we now have the blog, a Twitter account (the more recent updates can actually be seen on the side of the blog), and a Facebook page. If you know of anywhere else that is similar to Twitter and Facebook (besides Myspace) let us know.

And in submitting our recipes to various places we have actually been FEATURED multiple times. Yahoo! Our falafel and tahini gyro recipe is the recipe of the month at TryNewFood.com (we have other recipes on the site too), our pumpkin shortbread cookie recipe is the recipe of the week at LAVA, and as we mentioned in another post our lettuce wraps were featured in FARM USA’s Meatout Mondays e-Newsletter. Farm USA is the only one that archives so if you are reading this a week or month from now you won’t see our recipes being featured anymore.

And in personal news, Rahzh has a working job interview on June 8 at Farm Sanctuary for a Shelter Farm Assistant position. So everyone cross their hooves, paws, fingers, or anything else you have :D .

While we are mentioning Farm Sanctuary we should probably mention that they are having 2 bake sales as part of World Wide Vegan Bake Sale which takes place June 20-28. An excerpt about Farm Sanctuary’s bake sale:

Farm Sanctuary is holding a bake sale in New York City, on the Upper West Side, on Saturday June 27, and in Chico, California on Thursday June 25. In Ithaca, New York, on June 27, friends and colleagues will hold a bake sale to raise funds for former Farm Sanctuary employee Chuck Pappas, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year. You can read about Chuck’s story here.

Oh, and we almost forgot one last thing to mention. In the next day or two we will have a new post that is actually about food! Who would have thought. ;)

Several quick updates involving the Nets, food, FARM USA’s Meatout Mondays e-Newsletter, Farm Sanctuary

We have the nets once again!! Wow a whole week without net (not counting the time we were traveling without it) . And not counting the times we used the net at Grist Mill Cafe (which has some delicious Vegan options by the way) right down the road and at the Watkins Glen Public Library ;) Who knew it was even possible to go so long without the Internet!

We will have some new posts and pictures soon:food we made/had back in Eugene, places we ate at during our move, and food we made/had here.

Also just before we made our move from Oregon to New York we were featured in FARM USA’s Meatout Mondays e-Newsletter.

Woz had her first day at Farm Sanctuary on Monday and she really likes it there. They have multiple events planned for the future so you should check them out.

Also in Farm Sanctuary News, about a month or two ago they released their Virtual Experience which takes you into life of animals at the Sanctuary and into the horrific “life” of animals on factory farms.

Don’t forget to spread the word about us and our Facebook page.

Hungry Hungry Veganos updates. Wedding, Facebook, AND more.

Just a post to keep everyone updated!

We have many stories/pictures/recipes to post and soon we will get around to posting them all (we are still trying new foods and making new foods)! Recently we had been planning our wedding, had our families visit, and on April 26th, we officially tied the knot!!! One of the highlights was the wedding cupcakes from Eugene’s own Divine Cupcake. So nom! We are now Mr. and Mrs. Dotoños (we both decided to change our last names to something new. To see the meaning behind it check out Woz’s blog post). And, in the middle of all of this, we have also been planning a move. Whew!

That’s right, the Hungry Hungry Veganos will be leaving the Little Kitchen That Could and relocating from one coast to another. We are moving from Eugene, Oregon to about 20 miles west of Ithaca, New York (just a couple of miles outside of Watkins Glen). Woz will be doing events for Farm Sanctuary which is extremely exciting :D . So as you can see we have been quite busy! Once the move is over things should be a little more normal and posts should start back up on a regular basis. Also on our way to New York, we have plans to hit a couple of restaurants with some pretty good Vegan food and we will definitely make sure to take pictures before we devour it all. We arrive at our new place around May 20 so look forward to new posts soon!

We have also started a Hungry Hungry Veganos Facebook Page so feel free to become fans. We have posted some pictures and not all of them have been posted here yet. If you would like a sneak peek of some of the items we have made then check out our “Things we have prepared” album.

As you may have noticed this entry is not food related, but it is our blog so we make the rules ;) . So, on occasion, we may post non-food related entries. But trust us, they will be worth it!

If you answered yes to any of the questions in the title then you have to check out Artella.

Artella is pretty cool and it is a creative/artsy type community. It has a forum, a gallery and members can have their own blogs (Woz’s blog is The Bubble Gum Inspiration). On top of that it has an online store (some items being sold by Artella and some items being sold by members of the community). Artella also has workshops that some people might find interesting.

Right now there is a holiday gala sale going on (banner below). eStuff (such as eBooks, eArt supplies, and workshops) is 55% off. A bunch of other items are also on sale from 5-50% off (jewelry, books, art supplies, etc). So might be worth checking out :) .

*Update December 15,2008*

Artella added two more ways to save for the holiday and they are huge!

1. Save 55% off a six-month or full-year Luxury Artella Membership!

2. Save 55% off NEW Artella e-certificates! Artella e-Certificates are good on all Artella eProducts, and right now they are 55% off!
